Schonbrunn Summer Night Concert from Vienna (2015)

Summer Night Concert from the stunning Schonbrunn Palace Gardens in Vienna, where Zubin Mehta takes up the baton to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The concert features music from two 150th anniversary composers - Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius. Other pieces include two much-loved works from Edvard Grieg - the Piano Concerto in A minor, featuring Austrian soloist Rudolf Buchbinder, and the Peer Gynt Suite No 1 culminating in the exhilarating Hall of the Mountain King. Plus, of course, the obligatory chance to waltz during the finale with Johann Strauss Junior's Wiener Blut.

Le "Winterreise" de Schubert au Festival d'Aix-en-Provence Dernière actualisation 20.07.2015 - Filmé le 15.07.2014 - (82 minutes)

Le Voyage d'Hiver (ou Winterreise) de Franz Schubert dépeint l'errance d'un homme dans un paysage enneigé et désert. Alors aux prises avec l'angoisse d'une fin imminente, l'artiste insère dans sa composition les sujets qui le taraudent : la solitude, le désespoir et la mort. Ce chef d'oeuvre représente donc pour Schubert un véritable travail d'introspection. En conséquence, le voyage du personnage est double : physique et psychologique. Particulièrement sombres et lancinants, les vingt-quatre lieder qui constituent Le Voyage d'Hiver se basent sur des poèmes de Wilhelm Müller. Pour souligner la noirceur de ces textes et de cette composition : un ténor soutenu par un piano... une voix profonde et un instrument intimiste pour une oeuvre à la fois insondable et émouvante.

C'est le sud-africain William Kentridge qui s'attèle à la mise en scène de ce Voyage d'Hiver aixois. Après une Flûte enchantée et un Nez magnifiques, le génie du plasticien opère donc aujourd'hui sur une oeuvre bien plus minimaliste. Aux fameux collages et montages de Kentridge, viennent s'ajouter la voix de Matthias Goerne et le clavier de Markus Hinterhäuser. Le premier est l'une des références actuelles du Lied grâce à son timbre voilé et son sens inné du poids et du sens des mots. Le second, un pianiste émérite et le futur directeur du Festival de Salzbourg. Ce Winterreise d'exception transformera sans nul doute l'été provençal en une bouleversante nuit d'hiver...

Under the baton of its musical director Alan Gilbert, the New York Philharmonic makes its first appearance ever as a guest of the brand new Philharmonie de Paris. Together with the highly-acclaimed mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, they perform works by Salonen, Ravel and Strauss.

One of the world's leading orchestras, the New York Philharmonic has been conducted by such mythical figures as Gustav Mahler, Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez and Kurt Masur. Since 2009, Alan Gilbert has widely contributed to opening the enrichment of the New York Philharmonic's repertoire to more contemporary works. On this point, the piece that opens this concert, Nyx, was composed by Esa-Pekka Salonen. A highly renowned conductor, Esa-Pekka Salonen also dedicates his life to composition; he has in particular composed symphonic works and concertos that are marked by "melodic innovations". Joyce DiDonato, "nothing less than [a] 24-carat gold" voice, according to the Times, is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after mezzo-sopranos of our times. For this concert, she sings a gorgeous Shéhérazade in Ravel's eponymous work.

For the opening of the concert, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Maurice Ravel lead us to the ancient mythologies and in an imaginary world. Composed in 2010, the music of Salonen's Nyx reminds us of the story of the Goddess of the Night, one of the first goddesses who appeared after the Chaos. The music is like a reflection of this imperceptible goddess, qualified by Salonen as "nebulous". With Shéhérazade then, Ravel reminds us of the inspiration he founded in the East's charms. Here we have collected some verses of this work for voice and orchestra, inspired by the poem written by Tristan Klingsor:

"Asia, Asia, Asia!
Olden and wondrous land of tales dreamt by nursemaids,
Where sleeping fantasy lies like an empress fair
In her forest overflowing with mystery.
Asia... I should like to set out aboard the sea-bound schooner
Which is rocking this evening in port,
Mysterious and solitary;
And which at last unfurls its fluttering sails of purple
Like an immense night bird aloft in the golden sky."

Ravel's Valses nobles et sentimentales, which orchestral version was published in 1912, are marked by an impressionist musicality. The ternary rhythm of the waltz is here remarkably developed into several variations, sometimes in a dancing-like movement, sometimes in an enchanting atmosphere. But above all, the lightness of the musical motives and the very large range of dreamlike colours result in a fairylike work.

The Suite for orchestra taken from Strauss's original opera Der Rosenkavalier closes this concert. It was premiered at the Vienna Konzerthaus-Saal on September 28th 1944 and the New York Philharmonic performed it for the first time under Artur Rodzinski's baton a few days later.

Вылечила мужа от пьянства. А потом родила дочь Анетт. Раймонд и Лана вместе уже 45 лет.
О нем ходили разнообразные слухи. Самый популярный – о романе Паулса и Пугачевой. Ни Раймонд Вольдемарович, ни Алла Борисовна этот слух не опровергали, а сегодня говорят об этом с улыбкой.
Так все-таки кто же он такой – Раймонд Паулс? И что скрывается за его вечной невозмутимостью и погруженностью в себя? Илья Резник, Валерий Леонтьев, Лайма Вайкуле, Алла Пугачева и, конечно, сам Маэстро и его семья попытаются ответить на эти очень непростые вопросы.

Barbara Hannigan
Born and brought up in Canada, soprano Barbara Hannigan received her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Toronto, studying with Mary Morrison. She continued her studies at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague with Meinard Kraak and privately with Neil Semer. A frequent guest of the Berlin Philharmonic, she has also appeared with most of the other leading orchestras worldwide, with such conductors as Sir Simon Rattle, Pierre Boulez, Reinbert de Leeuw, Vladimir Jurowski, Lorin Maazel, Kirill Petrenko, Andris Nelsons and Esa-Pekka Salonen. Hannigan made her own conducting debut in 2010 at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, with Stravinsky’s Renard. Recent conducting engagements include the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, WDR, Prague Philharmonic, London Sinfonietta, L’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and Gothenburg Symphony. Her conducting debut at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam was awarded the Netherlands’ prestigious Ovatie prize for best classical music concert of the season. Much sought after in contemporary music, Hannigan has devoted an extraordinary amount of her life to singing the music of our time, and has given over 80 world premieres. She has worked extensively with composers including Ligeti, Boulez, Dusapin, Chin, Barry, Knussen, Benjamin and Abrahamsen, to name a few. Forthcoming world premieres include the title character in Gerald Barry’s new opera Alice in Wonderland, Ophelia in Brett Dean’s new opera on Hamlet, Sciarrino’s new work for soprano and orchestra, and a collaboration with fellow Canadian artist Owen Pallett. As a singing actress, her operatic repertoire includes Marie in Zimmerman’s Die Soldaten at the Munich Staatsoper, awarded Opernwelt’s 2014 Production of the Year, the world premiere of George Benjamin’s Written on Skin (role of Agnes), created for the Aix-en-Provence Festival and performed across Europe, including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and her highly praised debut as Berg’s Lulu at La Monnaie in Brussels. She has worked with directors including Warlikowski, La Fura dels Baus, Kriegenburg, and Greenaway. As dancer/singer, she has performed with Sasha Waltz and Guests since 2011, as the title role in Matsukaze as well as in Dusapin’s opera Passion. She has sung the title role in Stravinsky’s Le Rossignol, Gepopo/Venus in Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre, Armida in Handel’s Rinaldo, Fiordiligi in Cosi fan tutte, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni and will make role debuts as Melisande, and La voix humaine in the coming seasons. For her performances in 2012 and 2013 she was named Singer of the Year by Opernwelt magazine and Musical Personality of the Year by the Syndicate of the French Press. Her 2013 Deutsche Grammophon recording of Dutilleux’s Correspondances with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Orchestra of Radio France won the Gramophone Award as well as France’s Victoires de la Musique. She was artist-in-residence of the Zaterdag Matinee of Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw (2013/14), artistic director of Finland’s 2014 Suvisoitto Summer Festival and the Artiste Etoile of the 2014 Luzern Festival.
